Why can't ChatGPT play hangman?

ChatGPT is amazing!

Let me be clear about that... ChatGPT is immensely powerful and continues to surprise me with its versatility and capabilities.

Also... sometimes ChatGPT is comically inept at tasks that would be trivially easy for a simpler piece of software.

Tonight, I was chatting with ChatGPT to figure out what kind of games it could play. A word guessing game like Wheel of Fortune or Hangman seemed right up its alley.

What happened next revealed a bit about the inner workings of ChatGPT, the type of tasks it's well-equipped for, and the type of tasks where it can lead you astray.
